Summary

 

The Commercial Lines Auto Underwriter Sr. (CAR) manages risk selection for both new and renewal business within an assigned Commercial Lines underwriting territory, supporting Limited Service Carrier / ERP agents. In this role, you will influence overall profitability, rate adequacy, and the acceptability of risks placed within Commercial Auto (CAR), while also handling select voluntary business with assigned agents.

 

This position requires strong expertise navigating the CAR manual, including bulletins and evolving rule updates. You will build and maintain strong relationships with agents, Business Development Representatives, and underwriting partners. Additionally, you will perform key agency management responsibilities, including analyzing and monitoring agency performance to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement, and developing recommendations to enhance results and align with company objectives.

 

Working closely with assigned agencies, you will help drive profitability, improve business quality, and optimize portfolio composition while ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines and company strategy. You will also provide guidance and support to team members to help achieve service and production goals, and conduct research on technical underwriting issues to develop effective solutions and alternatives. Staying current on market conditions and industry trends is essential, as is providing technical training and support across teams. This role also serves as a leadership resource within the unit, including acting on behalf of the Supervisor when needed.

 

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Manage risk selection within an assigned underwriting territory by analyzing submissions and determining appropriate next steps. Ensures all submissions are evaluated, categorized, and handled efficiently. Refers accounts as needed based on authority levels. Selects, declines, or offers alternative solutions for risks while exercising sound judgment in pricing and binding coverage within authority.
  • Conduct underwriting analysis in alignment with established authority levels, guidelines, procedures, and underwriting philosophies. Research, documents, and resolve underwriting issues while applying discretion as appropriate.
  • Track and maintain detailed records of CAR rule violations. Monitors compliance and communicate violations to agents in a timely and professional manner, including applicable CAR rules. Prepares warning and termination documentation for management and legal review. Represents the company at industry meetings and hearings when requested.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of company products, pricing, underwriting guidelines, and philosophies. Interprets and communicates policy language, coverage details, endorsements, and underwriting positions. Serves as a technical expert for agents and internal staff.
  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships across underwriting teams and departments. Supports team success by assisting with goals, mentoring underwriters, and providing training and development support. Reviews and approves referrals within assigned authority while offering feedback and guidance.
  • Partner with the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) to assess questionable risks. Identify inconsistencies in underwriting documentation such as contracts, financial statements, tax forms, lease agreements, and owner-operator agreements. Communicates investigative findings clearly and professionally, including in complex or challenging situations.
  • Engage in continuous learning by developing a personal training plan to enhance knowledge, skills, and performance. Participates in training initiatives and professional development opportunities.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in CAR underwriting, including rules, manual usage, fraud detection, and eligibility validation. Provides technical guidance and training to underwriting and cross-functional teams. Participates in committees and workgroups, sharing insights and outcomes across the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with all CAR Rules, Procedures, and Rating Requirements as defined by the Limited Servicing Carrier Program.
  • Travel to agency partners as needed to support relationship development and business performance (minimal travel requirement).

 

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in a related field
  • 4–6 years of relevant experience, or Associate degree with 6–8 years of equivalent experience
  • Proven experience as a Commercial Lines Underwriter or similar role within an insurance organization
  • Strong skills in business judgment, analytical thinking, and risk assessment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated sales, negotiation, and relationship management capabilities
  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Industry designations such as AU, and progress toward CPCU or CIC, preferred

Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by several factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. Some roles at Mapfre are eligible for commission and/or bonus earnings, in addition to salary, calculated based upon factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

 

 

Salary Range $77,700 - $101,700
