We're looking for a Commercial Lines Underwriter eager to influence profitable results, strengthen agency partnerships, and play a key role in helping to advance Commercial Lines best practices for the future.

 

In this role, you will:

 

  • Drive profitable growth within your assigned territory by achieving underwriting and production goals across all Commercial Lines.
  • Build and sustain strong agency relationships, collaborating with agency staff, Business Development Representatives, and Renewal Underwriters.
  • Drive agency portfolio analysis and strategic planning to identify trends, risks, and growth opportunities, then develop and execute strategies that improve profitability, strengthen portfolio quality, and align results with underwriting and strategic growth objectives.
  • Contribute to the evolution of Commercial Lines best practices, supporting process modernization and the continued elevation of underwriting standards.
  • Support team success by collaborating with colleagues on service, production, and quality goals as needed.
  • Research and resolve complex underwriting issues, offering clear, actionable solutions and technical expertise to agency and internal partners.
  • Maintain awareness of industry and market trends to inform underwriting decisions and identify emerging opportunities.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Drive disciplined, profitable risk selection by analyzing submissions, determining next steps, and moving accounts efficiently to quote or decline.
  • Set pricing, recommend coverages, and highlight competitive advantages and account‑rounding opportunities.
  • Apply underwriting authority and guidelines while exercising sound judgment on exceptions.
  • Research, document, and resolve underwriting issues; develop solutions and refer accounts requiring additional authority.
  • Communicate underwriting appetite, decisions, and coverage value clearly and effectively to agents to strengthen relationships and improve hit ratios.
  • Partner with Agents and Business Development Representatives to identify growth opportunities and deliver proactive, high‑quality service.
  • Develop and execute an agency visitation plan to support profitable growth.
  • Excellent time management skills, responsiveness and willingness to adjust underwriting depth to appropriate level for each opportunity, based on account size and complexity.
  • Awareness of competitor products, programs, and rate actions to effectively position Mapfre solutions and provide market insights.
  • Maintain deep knowledge of Mapfre products, pricing, guidelines, and philosophies; serve as a technical resource for agents and internal teams.
  • Build strong relationships within the unit and across departments; support team goals and assist in training and development of peers as needed.
  • Review referrals from developing underwriters within authority and provide constructive feedback.
  • Pursue ongoing professional growth and participate in training opportunities identified by leadership.
  • Serve as a technical coordinator for specific lines or functions (e.g., reinsurance, filings, hearings) and participate in cross‑functional committees and work groups.

 

 

Qualifications

 

 

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience: 4 - 6 years of Commercial Lines underwriting experience, or Associates Degree equivalent plus 6 - 8 years of related experience.
  • Demonstrates ability to exercise business judgement, effective oral and written communications, sales and negotiations skills, analytical ability, and effective time management.
  • Prior Commercial Lines experience required.
  • AU and progress towards CPCU or CIC is preferred.

Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by several factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. Some roles at Mapfre are eligible for commission and/or bonus earnings, in addition to salary, calculated based upon factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

 

 

Salary Range $67,600 - $101,500
