Summary
Join a forward‑thinking underwriting team during an exciting time of growth and transformation as a Senior Middle Market Underwriter. This role requires advanced technical underwriting expertise, strong analytical capabilities, and the ability to influence profitable results within complex large commercial accounts.
You will be responsible for identifying, underwriting, pricing, and managing sophisticated new and renewal Large Accounts that align with Mapfre's appetite and profitability objectives. You will partner closely with agents, Territory Sales managers, loss control, and claims teams to support strategic account decisions and exceptional service delivery.
In this role, you will:
- Drive profitable growth within your assigned territory by achieving underwriting and production goals across all Commercial Lines.
- Build and sustain strong agency relationships, collaborating deeply with agency partners to influence portfolio quality, identify opportunities, and strengthen long‑term results.
- Conduct and contribute to large‑account‑focused portfolio analysis and strategic planning identifying trends, risks, and emerging opportunities.
- Help advance Commercial Lines best practices, supporting modernization efforts and the continual improvement of underwriting standards.
- Coordinate service delivery for large accounts, including loss control consultations, claims review, policy discussions, and service‑related follow‑up.
- Research and resolve complex underwriting issues, offering clear, actionable solutions and technical expertise to agency and internal partners.
- Serve as a technical expert, providing guidance, mentorship, and consultative insights on complex and sophisticated commercial exposures.
Responsibilities
- Profitably underwrite large commercial accounts, analyzing submissions and determining next steps.
- Set pricing, recommend coverages, and highlight Mapfre’s competitive advantages.
- Evaluate and document underwriting issues; develop solutions and refer for additional authority as needed.
- Apply underwriting guidelines while appropriately exercising judgment on exceptions.
- Maintains productive relationships with agents.
- Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of Mapfre’s insurance products, pricing, underwriting guidelines and philosophies.
- Interprets and communicates policy language, coverages, endorsements and Company philosophies.
- Maintains productive relationships with unit members and other departments. Assists other underwriters in meeting goals.
- Assists in the training and development of underwriting staff.
- Within assigned authority, reviews and approves referrals from developing underwriters and provides feedback.
- Maintain awareness of competitor products, industry trends, and market conditions to inform underwriting and positioning.
- Support modernization of underwriting processes and continuous improvement of Commercial Lines best practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional-level knowledge; or Associate degree with 8+ years of relevant experience.
- 6–8 years of underwriting experience.
- Professional designations such as CPCU or CIC are preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of Commercial Lines rating, coverage forms, risk evaluation, underwriting standards, and current industry trends.
- Demonstrated expertise in evaluating complex commercial exposures, including multi‑location, multi‑state, and multiline risks.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Sales and negotiation proficiency.

Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by several factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. Some roles at Mapfre are eligible for commission and/or bonus earnings, in addition to salary, calculated based upon factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
Salary Range $67,600 - $101,500
