About the Role

 

Mapfre is seeking a strategic and results-driven leader to shape the future of our Commercial Lines business. As Vice President, Commercial Lines Underwriting & Product Development, you will lead underwriting strategy, product development, pricing, and regulatory execution to deliver profitable growth, strengthen portfolio performance, and enhance customer value.

 

Working across underwriting, actuarial, operations, distribution, and other key business functions, you will translate business strategy into market-leading products, effective pricing strategies, and underwriting solutions that drive competitive advantage. This role leads a high-performing team responsible for innovation, operational excellence, and sustainable growth across the Commercial Lines portfolio.

 

What You'll Do

 

Lead Underwriting Strategy & Portfolio Performance

 

  • Establish underwriting frameworks, risk appetite, eligibility guidelines, authority structures, and portfolio management strategies.
  • Partner closely with Actuarial to develop pricing strategies, monitor portfolio performance, and optimize profitability.
  • Leverage market intelligence, data analytics, and loss trends to refine underwriting strategies and improve results.
  • Provide leadership and oversight across underwriting teams, lines of business, and delegated authority relationships.

 

Drive Product Innovation & Growth

 

  • Lead the end-to-end Commercial Lines product lifecycle, from strategy and design through implementation, enhancement, and optimization.
  • Develop competitive, customer-focused products aligned with business objectives and target market opportunities.
  • Identify emerging trends, customer needs, and market opportunities to drive product innovation and differentiation.
  • Maintain accountability for portfolio performance, product profitability, and growth outcomes across the Commercial Lines business.

 

Advance Regulatory & Operational Excellence

 

  • Lead state filing strategy and regulatory execution, ensuring compliance and alignment with product and pricing objectives.
  • Establish governance, controls, and processes that support timely and effective filings.
  • Partner with Operations, Digital, and Distribution teams to improve workflows, support automation initiatives, and enhance the customer and agent experience.
  • Provide underwriting and product leadership for strategic initiatives, product launches, and business transformation efforts.

 

Build High-Performing Teams & Strategic Partnerships

 

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing underwriting and product development organization.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Partner with senior leaders across Actuarial, Claims, Finance, Operations, Marketing, Distribution, and Digital to align strategy and execution.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor on underwriting performance, product strategy, portfolio management, and growth initiatives.

 

What You'll Bring

 

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • 12+ years of Commercial Lines underwriting, product development, or related insurance experience.
  • Proven leadership experience at the Director, AVP, or VP level.
  • Deep expertise in Commercial Lines products, underwriting, pricing, portfolio management, and regulatory filing processes.
  • Strong understanding of profitability management, risk assessment, and underwriting governance.
  • Demonstrated success partnering with Actuarial and cross-functional business leaders to drive strategic outcomes and profitable growth.
  • Exceptional communication, executive presence, and stakeholder management skills.
  • CPCU, FCIP, ACAS, FCAS, or similar professional designation preferred.
  • Experience leading product modernization, digital underwriting initiatives, automation strategies, portfolio transformation, and data-driven decision making strongly preferred.

Pay Transparency: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by several factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. Some roles at Mapfre are eligible for commission and/or bonus earnings, in addition to salary, calculated based upon factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.



Salary Range: $210,000 - $260,000
