Operations Analyst

Job Summary

Access and SAS querying experience, preferred.  Provide services to the entire Insurance Operations Department in terms of mathematical and data analysis, modeling of key business factors which impact the operation of the various departments within Insurance Operations, and extracting and reporting on expense, incurred, policy, indemnity, and various other data. Assist IT in defining reporting requirements and act as a resource to IT staff during their involvement in detail design and implementation of new or modified system generated reports. Assist staff and management in development and utilization of PC applications in such a manner that provides for maximum ease of use and requires minimal PC knowledge by user, including Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic Macro coding within Excel, Microsoft Word templates and applications, and efficient Internet and Intranet utilization, including development of internal departmental Word and Excel applications for the Insurance Operations Department utilizing the features built into the Microsoft Office Suite.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education: Bachelor's Degree or professional level of knowledge in a specialized field, or equivalent, related experience.
Experience: 2 - 4 years - or Associates Degree equivalent plus 4 - 6 years.
Knowledge: Complete understanding and knowledge of industry practices, standards, and concepts within field of work. Applies them to perform or lead work requiring extensive analytical business skills.
Decision Making: Makes decisions related to a wide variety of situations within management limits. Interprets guidelines and procedures, applying judgment and discretion. Decisions influence portions of a project, client relationships and/or expenditures.
Supervision Received: Works independently under general supervision. Work is reviewed for overall adequacy in meeting objectives.
Leadership: Provides guidance and training to less experienced staff as needed. Takes a lead role in group, team or project.
Problem Solving /Operations/Direct Work Involvement: Applies knowledge to determine solutions to complex problems with minimal direction. Uses research and analysis to develop innovative and practical solutions which are consistent with organizational objectives.
Client Contacts: Contacts other departments and or external organizations or parties frequently. Contacts are primarily at or below upper management levels. Represents organization on specific projects. Communication may involve persuasion, and negotiation.

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Experience in data collection, storage and reporting.
Strong PC skills, including query, spreadsheet, database, presentation and word processing, as well as Visual Basic and HTML within the Microsoft Office standard applications, i.e. Word and Excel.
Financial accounting, reporting, analysis, or auditing education and/or background.
Good understanding of the insurance business and/or knowledge of entire Claims process.
Good understanding of technology, both hardware and software.
Working knowledge of the Internet.
Ability to work in a team environment involving staff from Claims, Underwriting, Actuarial and Finance staff to seek out the best, cost effective solutions for Insurance Operations and MAPFRE Insurance needs.
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
High level of creativity, innovation, and decision making skills.
Possess a “big picture” orientation.
Flexibility and ability to handle a variety of assignments in various stages at the same time.
Ability to view solutions with a practical, cost effective approach and orientation.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Ability to generate enthusiasm and sell concepts, overcome resistance to change.
Ability to determine management reporting needs and isolate key variables which impact operations, expenses, and efficiency.

Ability to anticipate issues and situations in their early stages and work to creatively assist in resolving.
Possess knowledge of mathematical analysis and modeling and use of spreadsheets to develop models, including operational, strategic, intermediate range forecasting, justification, discovery, and simulation models.

Specific college degree programs or additional course work which are a plus include Mathematics, Business, Accounting, Finance, or computer related disciplines. In addition, professional designations in insurance including INS, CPCU, AIC are a plus.
