Job Summary
Position is located in Webster, MA or with a reasonable commute to accommodate a Hybrid schedule. Can also be based in Boston, MA with ability to travel to Webster, MA 2-3 days a week.
Manage one or two underwriting units within the Commercial Lines Underwriting Department. Plan and monitor the timely and accurate completion of the unit's responsibilities. Ensure the acceptability and profitability of the business produced by the agencies assigned to the underwriters, taking corrective actions when necessary. Assume responsibility for monitoring the underwriting experience and quality for multiple lines-of-business. Provide technical underwriting direction and assistance to the unit with complex functions and risks. Identify, analyze, and implement underwriting system and procedure changes to improve the department's effectiveness/efficiency and accuracy. Oversee the career development of the staff. Assure that the unit's functions are performed within established underwriting guidelines and standards. Coordinate the timely and professional preparation and distribution of relevant agency force informational/instructional materials. Collaborate with Product Management, Business Development, Claims, Business Development and Business Process Optimization, IT departments.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education: Bachelor's Degree or professional level of knowledge in a specialized field, or equivalent related experience preferred.
Experience: 9 - 11 years or Master's Degree equivalent plus 7 - 9 years.
Knowledge: Complete understanding and knowledge of industry, practices, standards, and concepts within field of work and broad business segment. Solid knowledge of management practices.
Decision Making: Influences development of overall objectives including long-range goals for the organization. Typically exercises judgment within broadly defined policies and practices. Establishes, modifies operating policies and procedures that affect subordinate units. Recommends modifications to broad operating policies which may impact projects, operations, and considerable expenditure risk and major portions of operations. Problems are generally diverse, complex and impact major business segments.
Supervision Received: Work is received in objective-oriented terms, with an emphasis on strategic as well as more near-term priorities. Work is reviewed from a strategic, relatively long-term perspective against major objectives.
Leadership: Middle manager who typically manages high level exempt employees, subordinate managers or supervisors and may manage multiple functions disciplines. Provides guidance based on organizational goals and company policy. Responsible for numerous functional and or technical projects. Develops and administers budgets, schedules, and performance requirements.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Three years prior underwriting supervisory or management experience.
Ability to work collaboratively with other functional areas.
Working knowledge of rate setting, product management, IT, policy services and communications.
