Summary

 

This role is ideal for a highly skilled claims professional looking to work with significant independence while handling high‑exposure, complex, and litigated claims across multiple lines of coverage — including Personal/Commercial, Homeowner Liability, Environmental, Life, and OTA losses (including GL).

You’ll manage the entire lifecycle of the claim: from coverage analysis and investigation through evaluation, negotiation, litigation management, and resolution. You’ll work closely with defense counsel, participate in high‑stakes discussions, and contribute to the professional development of peers.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • High‑Exposure Claims & Litigation Management
  • Independently adjust high‑exposure, complex casualty losses within granted authority.
  • Handle all assigned suits and manage litigation strategy.
  • Conduct multi‑jurisdictional coverage analysis and apply policy endorsements, exclusions, limitations, and relevant statutes.
  • Participate in Large Loss Committee reviews and present case evaluations.

 

Thorough Investigation & Evaluation

  • Conduct comprehensive investigations including recorded statements, site analysis, accident reconstruction, dram shop investigations, and witness canvassing.
  • Utilize IMEs, expert reviews, financial records, surveillance, vocational/economic experts, and other resources as needed.
  • Determine liability and proactively develop damage information.
  • Evaluate wage loss and other claims with appropriate investigative techniques.
  • Initiate timely and accurate reserve adjustments aligned with corporate philosophy.

 

Customer‑Focused Communication

  • Deliver timely, professional, empathetic communication to customers.
  • Meet all customer service standards and mandated deadlines.
  • Prepare insureds and witnesses for depositions and trials.
  • Collaborate actively with defense counsel and all stakeholders.

 

Quality, Productivity & Technical Expertise

  • Maintain proficiency in multi‑state policies, case law, coverage analyses, and claims procedures.
  • Use internal and external research tools to adjust claims across various jurisdictions.
  • Prepare detailed written evaluations outlining coverage, liability, damages, legal considerations, and settlement strategy.
  • Achieve settlement through negotiation, conferences, arbitration, and mediation.
  • Aggressively manage litigation, direct discovery activities, and ensure counsel complies with reporting and strategy.
  • Attend trials, depositions, arbitrations, and mediations as needed.
  • Obtain and maintain out‑of‑state adjusting licenses where required.

 

Leadership & Development

  • Serve as a mentor/resource to less experienced adjusters and contribute to their development.
  • Participate in formal peer training and departmental initiatives.
  • Represent the company in arbitration and court‑mandated appearances.
  • Identify workflow improvements and support committees or project teams.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and commitment to continuous learning.
  • Stay current with legal and industry developments impacting claims handling.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's Degree plus a certificate such as INS 21, 22, 23 (or equivalent), OR
    Associate's Degree plus 6–8 years related experience.
  • Certificates such as SCLA, AIC, CPCU, or equivalent are highly valued.
  • Minimum 5 years of technical claims experience, including bodily injury and litigation handling.
  • Mastery of multiple lines of business and working knowledge of multi‑state policies.
  • Experience with multi‑state losses; environmental or SIU experience is a plus.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, negotiation, and decision‑making skills.
  • Paralegal or law degree is a plus.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required adjusting licenses in multiple jurisdictions.

Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by several factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. Some roles at Mapfre are eligible for commission and/or bonus earnings, in addition to salary, calculated based upon factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

 

Salary Range Salary Range $67,600 - $93,400
