Summary:

 

Provide professional legal services, protects the best interest of clients on assigned cases, handles litigated cases and Court appearances and assists in advising the Claims Department and Company in tort, contract and insurance law. Competent knowledge of the legal system and all basics of litigation required. Must be capable of handling assigned cases to conclusion by bench or jury trial and have knowledge of insurance claim, tort and contract litigation.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Legal and Litigation Oversight * Handles assigned cases to conclusion, whether via settlement, arbitration or trial.
  • Completes appropriate legal action on assigned cases to protect the interests of the client.
  • Attends depositions, court conferences, arbitration hearings and trials.
  • Prepares timely and comprehensive reports to the Claim Department on all significant events, as required by company policies, internal requests or the Managing Attorney.
  • Prepares legal pleadings, motions and discovery on case assignments.
  • Schedules and attends conferences with the Claim Department, as necessary, to review pending litigation and develop general litigation strategies and plans.
  • Performs legal research when appropriate and as required.
  • Reports to and interacts with the Claim Representatives as to case developments and strategies.
  • Fosters effective, working relationships with the Claim Representatives through interaction, communication and collaboration.
  • Reports all potential high-exposure cases to the Managing Attorney.
  • Serves as legal expert in tort and insurance law * Provides opinion letters/memos to the Claims Department for proper disposition of claims.
  • Maintains professional competence through appropriate self-education or continuing legal education.
  • Analyzes new legislation and court decisions to support the Law Office, Claims and Company.
  • Apprise staff of changes in relevant tort and contract law.
  • Maintains membership in appropriate professional organizations and Bar Associations.

 

Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree or equivalent, related experience.
  • 2 - 4 years - or Associates Degree equivalent plus 4 - 6 years.
  • J.D. from an accredited Law School and admission to the Bar in jurisdiction(s) in which the office is located and practices is required. 0 - 4 years of relevant legal and litigation experience.
  • Prior civil litigation experience preferred, but not required.
  • Experience with independently managing litigated cases from inception to conclusion, preferred, but not required.
  • Experience within the insurance industry preferred, but not required.
  • Must have advanced written and oral communication skills. Proficiency with computer software including current Windows Operating System, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook and Legal Case Management Programs.
  • Must be able to handle a case load involving a minimal amount of trial work, communicate effectively and persuasively with clients, courts, the Claim Department, and outside professional legal personnel, competently represent the organization to members of the legal community, and other associations, analyze problems and recommend viable solutions relating to the management of litigation and effectively negotiate/plead cases in litigation.

Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by several factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. Some roles at Mapfre are eligible for commission and/or bonus earnings, in addition to salary, calculated based upon factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

 

 

Salary Range

 

$80,000 - $130,000
